Early time dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions: field decay and quark gluon plasma production, thermalization and isotropization

ABSTRACT: In this talk I discuss early times dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions, modelled by an initial color electric field which decays to a plasma by the Schwinger effect. The coupling between the dynamical evolution of the field to the one of the plasma is described by relativistic kinetic theory. We study isotropization and thermalization of the plasma for a 1+1D expanding geometry. We find that regardless of the viscosity of the produced plasma, the initial color electric field decays within 1 fm/c; however in the case the ratio shear viscosity over entropy density is large, plasma oscillations are present and are effective along the entire time evolution of the system. Unless we consider perturbative coupling in the plasma we find that isotropization takes about 0.8 fm/c and thermalization about 1 fm/c in agreement with the common lore of hydrodynamics.
