Description

The impossibility to distinguish a local experiment in free space from one in a free falling elevator led Einstein to the development of the theory of general relativity. Interestingly, the universality of free fall can be tested by exploiting matter-wave interferometry in microgravity. In particular, millions of atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate can be described by a single macroscopic wave function which offers itself for quantum interference experiments. We describe BEC quantum interference in an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder-type interferometer during free fall taking advantage of the scaling approach in the time-dependent Thomas-Fermi approximation.
