Description

Protons are composite particles and, when they collide at high enough energy, many interactions among their elementary constituents, so-called partons, can happen. At LHC energies, the phenomenon of multiple parton interactions (MPI) is not anymore a second order effect. In fact, it is essential to fully describe the mechanisms of particle production and it provides a fundamental reference for the background processes accompanying any signal of discovery.
When MPI occur at low transverse momentum scale, theoretical calculations are not trivial as the non-perturbative regime is explored. Therefore, experimental results are crucial for constraining phenomenological models.
ALICE is able, with a two-particle correlations method, to give an estimate of the number of MPI by studying the yield of minijets, i.e. jets at low pT, with the change in event multiplicity.
In this talk, recent results of minijets and MPI analysis are presented for proton—lead collisions, as they turn out to be able to shed some light on interesting and puzzling features of such small collision systems.
