Il 5 Novembre, alle ore 16 in aula multimediale, il dr. Piet Verwilligen, University of Wisconsin – Madison (USA) terra' un seminairo dal titolo:
Upgrade of the CMS detector towards the HL-LHC

ABSTRACT: The Large Hadron Collider will end its first phase of operation (approximately 10 years) around 2020 with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb^-1. To exploit the LHC to the maximum and increase its physics reach, the exploitation of an upgraded High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) for another 10 years (second phase) has been approved. The LHC will undergo a major upgrade around 2020 to increase its instantaneous luminosity by a factor 10 and will allow to record 3000 fb^{-1}. This intensity upgrade will substantially enlarge the mass reach for new particle searches, and allow further study of the properties of the Higgs boson discovered in 2012. The high luminosity delivered by the LHC requires a substantial upgrade of the CMS experiment and several detectors will be replaced. Other detectors will be maintained but will have reached by then a respectable lifetime and ageing effects have to be addressed. The upgrade aims to maintain the high performance of the CMS experiment during the first years to identify and measure the objects of the collisions with high precision. In this presentation Dr. Verwillingen will present the conceptual design of the various upgrades to the CMS experiment, along with their expected performances.
